New Year's Eve, 2012

Bismillahir rahmanir raheem...

New Years Eve. Extremist groups in Russia and Belgium continue to associate the way of our noble prophet (peace be upon him) with ignorance and intolerance. So sad. As I listen to NPR at 8am while my wife sleeps and my son crawls around the playpen, I pray for a global revival of spirituality that will remove both fanaticism as well as apathy.

Lately I've been trying to understand the appeal (and prevalence) of Wahhabi-Salafi ideas among Muslims worldwide. How is it that so many, particularly of the younger generation, can be driven to reject the long history of tolerance and spirituality that typifies the Islamic tradition?
